Final statement

My theme for advanced image creation is called masking identity. It is about society and the media putting pressure on young girls and women to look and act a certain way. The masks take many forms but the mask I’m focusing on is the one we create in order to hide our true identities. From a young age we are shown images of beautiful women who are photoshopped by the media and film industries. They create the illusion of what women ‘should’ look like. Obviously these images are fake and unnatural but we are still influenced and brainwashed by them. This can have a negative impact on people and cause self confidence issues. One negative result is that people hide behind a mask because they feel as though they wont fit in with their real identity. Therefore they create a mask to hide behind and over time become dependent on the mask.

This poster is about hiding your identity from the world. It shows how easily we are influenced by other people, society and the media. It shows how the innocent are easily manipulated and controlled. It represents the dark side of the film industry and shows how you loose your identity when you step foot into that world. When you do loose your identity, you loose your voice and your own free will. If you don’t do as they say they will put you in the background where you will fade away. This image represent the mask we create in order to shield us from the negativity in the media. Its about not having confidence and belief in ourselves because of the pressure from the media and society. It also shows how we can have multiple personalities and each of those is its own mask.  We wear different personalities in different environment. But the question is; Which personality is our real identity? Who are we really? We become so dependent on hiding behind our hands that our own identity disappears from existence.  After a while we are then trying to control what we present to the world and overtime cracks begin to appear. The secrets of your real identity start to escape between the cracks in the mask.

When I was designing this poster I researched different artist for inspiration. One artist who influenced my poster was Jackson Pollok. I am intrigued by the dramatic chaotic brush strokes he uses. His work is about emotion and the gestures associated with the emotions which then cause the actions of the brush strokes. The paint represents the inner state of the artists and the emotions he is feeling while painting. I incorporated the same effect in my poster. I used a drip brush effect on the faces which represent the inner emotion of the character. I used a dodging and burning technique to lighten and darken some areas which create the spotlight effect.

The logo I selected was the MGM film companies logo. My theme is about masking identity because of the pressure the media put on young women to look and act a certain way. This company is the perfect example because they put a serious amount of pressure on their actresses. Even child actresses. They had control over the women and basically told them how to act, live and look. They lost their voice and own freedom when they entered the film industry. I am focusing on the dark side of the film industry and how it caused actresses to loose their identities and wear these fake masks when they were in the spotlight.

Poster week 4

Poster 1 is about masking identity. It's about society putting pressure on young girls to look and act a certain way. It's about suffocation and fear. The fear is not being able to express and show who you are because of society. It's also about real vs fake. If you put on this mask, does that make you a fake person? Is society fake?

Poster 2 is about masking identity. It shows the damage the mask is doing to yourself. Does a mask cause you to loose your identity and disappear? Even though you are wearing this mask to try and fit in, society is still tearing you down and putting pressure on you to look and act a certain way. However no matter how hard you try to hide your true identity, your eyes will always reveal the truth.

Poster 3 is about camouflage and masking your identity. It's about selecting a new identity. The metal clockwork represents your mind and how you decide and create this new mask and identity to wear. Its also the mask you hide your real self behind. The eye represents your soul and they reveal the truth. Even though you try to hide your identity, your eyes will always expose your real identity and emotions.

Poster 4 represents masking identity and the media. It also explores the idea of real and fake. Celebrities are constantly under pressure over their their image and appearance. They are constantly posting photoshopped images of themselves on social media. Celebrities influence young people. This can have a negative effect because young people ( and older people) believe that these fake, photoshopped images are what society thinks is beautiful. This image also contains a doll which represents youth and childhood innocence. The barbie doll has an unhealthy body which has an effect on young people. What are toy companies and the media trying to tell young people? That fake is beautiful? That having an unhealthy body size is beautiful?

Poster 6 is about masking identity and selecting a new identity. Its about creating a mask and how you wear this fake identity in order to fit in with society. Because of this mask we feel like plastic that society just wants to mould into the image they want. We loose part of who we are because of having to put on an act the whole time. However the eye is the window to our soul and it always reveal our real emotions and identity.

This image is about masking identity. Its about hiding who you are from the world and putting on this fake identity. This mask works in two ways. It makes you invisible in society but it also sucks the life out of your own identity. The longer you wear it the more you become dependant on it. However you can't mask the emotions in your eyes and they will always reveal who you really are. So even when you are trying to hide who you are, some part of you will always be exposed for the world to judge.

Poster week 3

Poster 1 is about masking identity and the damage masks can do. The thorns represent society and the pressure it puts on women to look and act a certain way. The plastic doll is the mask that we hide behind. We hide behind a plastic mask in order to fit in with our peers and society. However this cause damage to our self esteem and confidence. We put on a fake smile and try to keep moving forward.

Poster 2 is about masking identity and masking and selecting emotions. We have multiple emotions and facial expressions. However we don't/can't express all of them because of fear of judgement. We have to act a certain way in a professional working environment. We have to mask our true feelings and because of it feel like a plastic doll who just has a fake smile on her face.

Poster 3 is about identity and sexuality. As we are growing up we learn more and more about who we are. This poster is about sexuality which is one aspect of our identity. Society adores labels and likes to assign us labels before we even figure out who we are. We are plastic dolls put into different categories. Until we are ready, we hide in the dark while we figure out our emotions and who we are. So in that sense we hide behind a mask.

Poster 4 is about masking our identity in different situations. Its about how we act a certain way in a professional environment vs on a night out. However which of these personalities is the real us? We wear multiple masks that sometimes they blend into each other and become who we are. The question is what is our mask and what is part of our true selves.

Poster 5 is about masking identity and body image. We are influenced by the media and society from a young age. Young girls play with barbie dolls that have unhealthy bodies. What message are toy companies giving young girls?!?Does  pretty means super skinny waist and matchstick arms?! Celebrities and the media influence young women and show them photos of photoshopped models that are too skinny. Society deem this beautiful. If we are told this is what beautiful is, how do you think this effects our self esteem and confidence. As a result beautiful, thin girls wear layers of makeup and develop eating disorders. Why does society think fake is beautiful?

Poster 6 is about masking identity in terms of age. For some reason we start lying about our age at a young age. When we are children we want to be older so we can get into a certain movie or go on a roller-coster that has an age limit. When we are teenagers we act younger so we can get a child's ticket on the bus and so we can get a child's portion cause its cheaper. We also lie and say we are older so we can purchase alcohol and get into clubs. When we are adults we reach a point where we lie and say we are younger but the younger you are the more attractive you are? Age is such a big deal in society and we never seem happy at any age. We can't stop time. We are constantly growing older. Its best to accept it but make sure we stay young at heart.

Poster week 2

Here are my poster ideas for week two. My theme is Masking identity and this can be incorporated in many different ways. Its about selecting a new identity or hiding behind a new identity or mask.

Poster one is about selecting gender and wear a mask to hide your real identity because society isn't as accepting as your family and friends. Its also about gender stereotypes and how we are put under pressure to be a certain way because society tells us at a young age this what girls and boys should act like and dress.

The second poster is about identity and sexuality. Sexuality is part of our identity. It makes us who we are. The poster is about an individual with a blank canvas and there are trying to make an important decision. What their sexuality is. In our society there are so many labels and titles. The label should not be important. What is important are your feelings. However society has a thing for labels and loves to focus on the outside and not what's on the inside.

The third poster is about masking identity and emotions. Its about how we express different emotions and different sides of our personality to certain people. Its about the fine line between your personal life and your work life. How you act a certain way in a working environment and another way with family and friends.

The forth poster is about masking identity and emotions. Its about wearing a mask to hide our true emotions. Its also about how we show certain emotions and act a certain way to certain people and in certain situations.

The fifth poster is about masking identity and the damage is causes. Society puts pressure on us to look and act a certain way. We then put on this mask in order to fit in. Wearing a mask all the time causes damage to our true identities. Over time we tend to lose parts of who we are or forget who we are. All we are left with then is a mask.

The sixth poster is about masking identity and different skin tones. You see so many photos of celebrities and people applying bottles and bottles of fake tan so that they can appear darker or more tan. I am sure that some people have also tried to make their skin lighter. I question society quite often because I don't understand it sometimes. Why are we trying to be something we're not. Why not accept who we are and treat each other equally.

Poster ideas!

My theme is masking identity so using my previous photoshoots as inspiration I photographed and designed these poster ideas.

This poster is about the pressure society puts on us to look and act a certain way. We are forced to wear this fake make. However this mask causes pain and damage to us. It causes cracks in our self esteem and confidence. In a way it breaks us.

This poster is about how the media and society puts pressure on young girls to look a certain way. We are surrounded by beautiful models who are photoshopped. The photos in magazines and online or unrealistic but we start to compare ourselves to them. As a result we try to change our appearance with the use of makeup, hair dye and in extreme cases, plastic surgery.

This poster is about society and how it tries to put us into boxes and tell us how to look and act. As a result we have to hide our true identities and wear a mask. We are not free to express ourselves and as a result blend into the background.

This poster is about the pressure society puts on young girls to look and act a certain way. From a young age we are influenced by the media and brainwashed into thinking that fake and photoshopped is beautiful. We copy celebrities and imitate them. We create a mask that helps us be 'normal' and fit in with society. Deep down we are insecure and unsure about expressing ourselves.

This poster is about masking identity. It shows a girl who wears a mask that hides her true identity. This poster can be interpreted in two ways. One could be a person trying to hide the scars and pain that are a result from a tragic incident. Another could be a pretty girl who has an ugly personality. No matter how beautiful you are, your personality will always show through the mask.

This poster is about masking identity. Its about deciding who you are and who you want to be. In video games you can select your avatar but what if you could do the same in reality. What if you had to option to change your appearance everyday. Would you do it?

This poster is about the light and dark sides of masking identity. Young children wear masks in a playful innocent way. However in recent times this type of mask has been used in a darker, more sinister way.

Photoshoot 8

This image is about a broken relationship between two peoples. It shows how there was trust and support but then because of some incident someone got hurt and the trust is broken.

This image is about society and people. It shows how we are all connected and how we influence on another. However this can be both positive and negative. It shows the structure of society. If we take away one of the lines the whole structure will collapse which makes it extremely fragile.

The photograph is about life and how we are sent on a path that we our told is what life is all about. It shows the rules and control society has on us and how it influence us. It shows the damage is does to us and the pressure it puts on young people.

This image is about life and society. Society puts pressure on us to look and act a certain way. This images shows how one person decided to be themselves and to think outside the box. It shows how its scary to be unique and how you can get hurt and damaged by it. But it also shows that it makes you stronger and that you are still alive.

Photoshoot 7

This image is about being independent and not following the crowd. When we are young we are set on a path that we are apparently suppose to follow : School, college, job, marriage, kids. This is apparently our happily ever after. However not everyone would want this path or life. Some create their own paths and find their own happily ever after.

This image is about saying goodbye to your childhood. Everyone has to grow up at some stage. We enter different stages of life and have to say goodbye to others. Even though the memories are old and rusty, we will still cherish them because they made us who we are.

This image is about betrayal. It shows the foundation of a relationship and how it has grown but suddenly they we betrayed and how they fought to keep the structure there.

This image is about family and friendship and how we learn to trust one another and share our thoughts and secrets. It shows how some relationships are old and start to become frail but how we still trust and respect one another.

This image represents the problems and issues in society. It shows have these problems have been there for years but still no one has done anything about them. It shows how this issue has been passed on generation to generation. Therefore is shows the influences society has on the younger generations.

Photoshoot 6

This image represents society and the rules is sets. It shows how broken we are because of them. I also shows how as people we can step outside of the box and go against what society says.

This images shows the damage society does to people. It tries to put us into boxes and gives us labels and tell us how to dress and act. Because of this people can become unstable and destructive. Both to themselves and to those around them.

This photo is about the support we have for our friends and family. It shows how we all have our scars but even though we are broken, we still have support.

This photo shows the cracks and damage in society. Society creates this perfect mask but underneath there is a lot of darkness and evil. It shows how we influence one another. It also shows that we all have good and evil inside of us.

This photograph is about abandonment and neglect. Its about the darkness and evil in society. It shows that if we take a wrong turn we will lose the people we care about. This image is about being forgotten. How when we die, we become memories.

Photoshoot 5

This image is about society and how it sets some rules so that we have order and control. However some of these rules may not be the right thing and cause people damage.

This image is about how society sets us rules and a path that we must follow. For example, school, college, job marriage, children. We are all brainwashed into thinking this is the meaning of life. However some paths turn and go in the opposite direction. Some paths just stop completely. The important thing is that you create your own path.

This image is about people, personality and society. Everyone has their own unique personality. As children we are controlled and told to raise our hands when we want to talk. We have to wear the exact same neat uniform. We aren't allowed to express our individuality.

This image is about how society tries to control us by setting rules and structure. The rules and unwritten rules cause us damage and you can see the dirt society is trying to hide.

This image reminds me of childhood innocence. Its about how when we are young we attend school and follow the instructions and rules. We are controlled and taught what is right and wrong. However the ones controlling us can be wrong.

Photoshoot 4: Hope, nature and taking a chance!

For this photo shoot I decided to photograph nature because it is complicated and beautiful. There is so much happening around us and if we don't open our eyes a actually look, we will miss it. When I was on this walk I was drawn to cobwebs, fallen leaves and the texture and detail on the trees and leaves. Here are the photo graphs I have selected from this photo shoot.

I believe that image represents people and how we have so many layers that protect our inner most thoughts and feelings. Furthermore it shows the damage people can do to other people and how the scars never truly disappear.

This image is about freedom and wanting to escape. We are all connected and tied together because of rules, status, labels and society. This photo is about taking a stand and being free from what society tells you should be and instead what you want to be.

This photo is about taking a chance and leaping. Its about following your dreams and failing. Its about never giving up hope. You might fall but if you do, just get back up again.

This image represents support. Its about your family and friends being there for you. Even though you have a rough relationship and you can see the cracks and damage, the main thing is that they are still there for you.

This photograph is about friendship and support. The relationship might have flaws and has faced a lot of obstacles but the main thing is that they are still by your side no matter where you go or what you decide to do.

This photo is about life and death. It shows the ups and downs that happened throughout life. It shows how people come and go in our lives. It shows the damage and pain in our lives but also the hope and light.

This image is about taking a chance and trying to reach your goals. It shows that even though we might fall some time, someone will always catch us and help us on our feet so we can try again.

This image shows that happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.

This image shows the damage that society can do to a person because we all have to act and think a certain way so that we can be considered 'normal'. It shows how it can break someone but also shows how it makes them stronger.

We might not like the places we live in because it is broken or damaged but somehow we are still able to call it home. This image is about finding a place to call home.
